Frequently Asked Questions

I am not a pilot. Can I participate?

Yes. While this curriculum is aimed in those that find themselves in the back of a small airplane over mountainous terrain, you don’t have to be a pilot to benefit from this. In fact, hunters, fishermen, and wilderness guides would all benefit from the information provided. If needed, a charter flight into Root Ranch can be arranged.

I have never flown into Root Ranch. Is it safe?

Backcountry aviation inherently carries more risk than other types of aviation. If you are not proficient in mountain flying skills, please do not attempt to fly into this course. If you are a transient pilot, we can find a mountain flying instructor to fly with you, or we can recommend a charter service leaving from Salmon, Stanley or Challis. Or sign up with a friend who’s already been flying in the backcountry previously.

More information on this Airstrip can be found at the Idaho Aviation Association’s Website: https://idahoaviation.com/airstrips/root-ranch/

Can my entire organization or club sign up for the seminar?

If your flying service, government organization, or squadron is interested in group education then please contact us directly. We can create something tailored exactly for your needs. Need more survival stuff…we have got you covered. Only want to fashion improvised splints, then we can do that.

Is food included?

Meals will be professionally made by the staff at Root Ranch.

Do I get Wings credits?

Yes! Pilot participants will walk away with 12 FAA Wings Credits, Wilderness First Aid Certificate, Stop the Bleed Certificate, amazing skills, and new friends.

How much does it cost?

$800 per participant. This cost covers flying in educators from out of state as well as training materials, food, etc.. We didn’t start this course to make money. We started it to make a difference. So if cost is an issue for you then talk to us.

What do I need to bring?

You should bring camping gear and whatever you’d typically fly with on a trip in the mountain west. A packing list will be provided a month prior to class start. We strongly recommend camping as we will be spending the majority of our time outside. However, if you’d like a cabin a select few are available for additional costs.
